A single-unit porcelain veneer for an 80-year-old gentleman who still cares deeply about his smile
When we think about cosmetic dentistry, we often imagine younger patients looking for a complete smile makeover.
But this case reminded us that there is no age limit to caring about your smile.
Our patient is an 80-year-old gentleman who has always been very particular about his appearance.
He was highly conscious of his teeth and, whenever he smiled, he would often try to cover his mouth.
For him, having a beautiful smile was never about looking perfect.
It was simply about feeling good when he smiled.
The Challenge of One Missing Lower Incisor
The tooth we were working on was one of his lower front incisors.
When there was an empty space, the difference was surprisingly obvious.
Because it was located right at the front of his smile, even one missing tooth changed the overall appearance of his lower teeth.
And when we replaced that space, the transformation was immediate.
One tooth made a much bigger difference than you might expect.
✨ Why Porcelain for a Patient Who Smokes?
One of the advantages of porcelain is its smooth, relatively stain-resistant surface compared with composite resin.
This can be particularly useful when aesthetics are an important concern for a patient who smokes.
However, it is important to understand that porcelain does not prevent all staining.
Smoking can still contribute to staining of the natural teeth, plaque, gums and the margins around a restoration.
Good oral hygiene and regular professional dental care remain important.
For our patient, the goal was to choose a material that could provide a more stable and natural-looking aesthetic result while fitting into his existing smile.
🦷 A Single Porcelain Veneer
Rather than changing multiple teeth, we focused on one tooth.
A single-unit porcelain veneer was carefully planned to restore the missing tooth and harmonise with the surrounding lower incisors.
With a single front tooth, colour, shape, size and position all matter.
It cannot simply look beautiful on its own.
It needs to belong with the neighbouring teeth.
And this is where careful planning makes a difference.
😊 The Moment He Saw His New Smile

When the porcelain veneer was finally in place, the difference was remarkable.
The empty space was filled.
The lower front teeth looked more complete.
And most importantly, he was thrilled with the result.
He looked at his new smile and immediately felt that he looked more than 10 years younger.
For us, that was such a beautiful moment.
Because what changed wasn’t just the tooth.
It was the way he felt about himself.
❤️ No More Hiding His Smile
Before treatment, he would often cover his mouth when he smiled.
After receiving the porcelain veneer, he could smile openly again.
At 80 years old, he was still just as excited about having a beautiful smile as anyone else.
And honestly, that is one of the things we love about dentistry.
A smile doesn’t have an age.
Whether you’re 20, 50 or 80, feeling confident about your smile can make a difference to how you carry yourself and how freely you express yourself.
Is a Porcelain Veneer Suitable for Everyone?
Not necessarily.
A porcelain veneer is not simply chosen because someone wants a whiter or more beautiful tooth.
We need to consider factors such as:
- The condition of the tooth
- The amount of remaining tooth structure
- The position and bite
- Gum health
- Oral hygiene
- The patient’s aesthetic expectations
- Habits such as smoking or teeth grinding
For our patient, we carefully assessed the tooth and discussed the available options before deciding that a single porcelain veneer was appropriate.
Every smile—and every tooth—has a different story.
🦷 Sometimes, One Tooth Is All It Takes
This case was a wonderful reminder that cosmetic dentistry doesn’t always mean changing an entire smile.
Sometimes, one carefully planned tooth can make a remarkable difference.
For our 80-year-old gentleman, replacing that one lower incisor meant more than filling an empty space.
It meant being able to smile without covering his mouth.
It meant feeling more confident about his appearance.
And perhaps most importantly, it reminded us that it’s never too late to do something that makes you feel good about your smile.
