Kids Dental Education Series β Post #4

One of the most common questions we hear from parents is:
βItβs only a baby tooth. Do we really need to treat it?β
It is understandable why parents may think this way. After all, baby teeth are eventually going to fall out.
But although baby teeth are temporary, they still play an important role in your childβs growing years.
π¦· Why Do Baby Teeth Matter?
Baby teeth help your child:
- Chew food comfortably
- Speak and pronounce words properly
- Smile with confidence
- Maintain space for the developing permanent teeth
They also help guide the permanent teeth into their proper positions as your child grows.
So while they may not stay forever, baby teeth are important until they are naturally ready to fall out.
π What Happens If a Cavity Is Left Untreated?
A cavity may start as a small spot or hole and cause no discomfort at all.
But dental decay can gradually become larger and deeper.
If left untreated, your child may eventually experience:
- Tooth sensitivity
- Pain when eating
- Difficulty chewing
- Swelling or infection
- Difficulty sleeping because of toothache
What starts as a small cavity can sometimes become a much bigger problem.

This is an important point for parents to remember:
A cavity does not always hurt in the beginning.
Children may also not realise that something is wrong, especially when the decay is still small.
This is why regular dental check-ups are important, even when your child seems perfectly well.

πͺ₯ Prevention Starts at Home
Good daily oral hygiene is one of the most important ways to reduce the risk of cavities.
Encourage your child to:
- Brush regularly with fluoride toothpaste
- Brush all surfaces of the teeth
- Limit frequent sugary snacks and drinks
- Attend regular dental check-ups
And remember, children may still need help with brushing for many years as they develop the coordination to clean all areas properly.

In certain cases, preventive treatments such as fluoride treatment or fissure sealants may also be recommended to protect areas that are more prone to cavities.
π‘οΈ Does Every Cavity Need a Filling?
Not necessarily.
The treatment depends on several factors, including:
- How deep the cavity is
- Which tooth is affected
- Your child’s age
- How soon the baby tooth is expected to naturally fall out
- Whether there are signs of infection
Sometimes, a small area of decay may be managed with preventive care and close monitoring.
In other situations, a filling or another treatment may be recommended to keep the tooth healthy until it is naturally replaced by the permanent tooth.
Every child and every tooth is different.
That is why an assessment is important before deciding whether treatment is needed.
β€οΈ Baby Teeth Deserve Care Too
Although baby teeth are temporary, they are an important part of your child’s development.
Taking care of them helps your child eat, speak, smile and grow comfortablyβwhile also supporting the development of their permanent teeth.
So if you notice a dark spot, a hole, food frequently getting stuck between the teeth, or if your child complains of sensitivity or pain, don’t simply wait for the baby tooth to fall out.
Let your dentist have a look and help you understand what is happening.
